An astounding act of generosity and hope has changed the lives of one Pequea, Penn., family. Paula Dussinger opened her newspaper on an early morning last March, and read a story about homeless teenagers living at a nearby rescue mission in Lancaster County. According to the Intelligencer Journal Dussinger read the article a dozen times, and finally decided that she had to take action. After consulting her husband, she called the mission, and within weeks she met Allison Rossi, a girl profiled in the story. Ronald Madison was shot to death on the Danziger Bridge.
In Hurricane Katrina’s chaotic aftermath, police shot six people – killing two – as they crossed a bridge in search of food. For years the case was a shocking symbol of the confusion and violence that swept through the flooded city. On Wednesday it became a mark of shame for the police department.
